Its been a busy week for the food truck industry here in Hawaii. This is the third new truck ive gone to visit in a pretty short time. Can’t wait to see what lays further down the road. I mean, who doesnt love a new food vendor.
The latest entry to the HIfoodtruck scene comes to us from the West Side. Rockett’s Philly Cheesesteaks
After retiring from the military, owner Mark Rockett decided to venture into the food truck business, offering hawaii a taste of a proper philly cheesesteak.
We caught up with Rockett’s today at the Saint Frances Medical Plaza out in Ewa Beach.
We got the heads up that Rockett’s would be here on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting today. So naturally we had do go down and check him out on his first day.
We pulled off of Fort Weaver road, into the medical center, and spotted the white truck right away.
Not bad for the first day. Just in the short time we were there, he had quite a few orders. And after ordering a couple of sandwiches, i could definitely see why.
First i got to try the Italian Sub. A cold sub with slices of ham and salami with provolone.
And of course, what i came for. The namsake.
Awesome Philly for sure. No thinly sliced beef here. I watched as mark threw a whole steak on the griddle, and chopped it up with the spatulas. Then added a handful of his slow caramelized onions before melting on the cheese. Lots of flavor all the way through the meat, and the bread was thick enough for your hands to stay clean. Im looking forward to going back for another one sometime soon.
He also has a Ham and Cheese, as well as a Veggy and Cheese, but really, you need to get the philly. If i knew then what i know now, i would have got 2 phillys.
As hes just getting started, his schedule is tentitive, but heres a proposed schedule for Rockett’s Cheesesteaks:
Monday – Punchbowl
Tuesday – Hospital off Fort Weaver (this may change to Taco’ako at Kakaako)
Wednesday – Campbell Industrial
Thursdays – Hospital off Fort Weaver
Friday – Punchbowl
We will be reposting his location on our twitter feed as its updated. So make sure youre following our twitterfeed at @streetgrindz.
Mark @ Rockett’s makes the best cheese steak I have had since I moved back to Oahu in 2009.
Chuco,
Thanks for coming out today. My cheesesteaks are the “Original Philly Cheesesteak” you get back in Pennsylvania.
I’m very glad you enjoyed yours and look forward to Eat the Street and events.
We will always server ONLY fresh food that tastes great!
I buy my produce local and my bread and steak comes straight from Pennsylvania. So, if you love cheesesteaks and are having a hard time finding a good one, come try a great one at Rockett’s Philly Cheesesteaks!
