Kaka’ako was at it again this afternoon,the Pa‘i‘ai at the Whole Ox Deli was a benefit pop-up luau for Hui Aloha ‘Aina Momona, a non-profit group dedicated to restoring and promoting practices based on kalo culture. This event was a culinary celebration of pa‘i‘ai, a hand-pounded taro used to make poi. The star studded line up of chefs included Ed Kenney of Town Restaurant, Bob McGee of The Whole Ox Deli, Daniel Anthony of Mana ‘Ai, Mark “Gooch” Noguchi of He‘eia Kea Pier General Store & Deli, Andrew Le of The Pig and The Lady, and guest chef Lee Anne Wong from the Cooking Channel’s show “Unique Eats”.
The laid back afternoon was filled with music and the rhythms of pa‘i‘ai. There was also an above ground imu that turned out a crispy and juicy 90 lb pig, the line for the sliders with a bit of crispy skin went to the street and down the block.
